Benefits of Massage
Massage has many important physical, mental, and emotional benefits. According to the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals, massage therapy can:
- Help release chronic muscle tension and pain
- Improve circulation
- Increase joint flexibility
- Promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue
- Improve posture
- Reduce blood pressure
- Promote better sleep
- Improve concentration
- Reduce anxiety
- Provide greater energy
- and Create an overall sense of well-being
With the increased circulation that massage provides, fresh oxygen is brought to the body’s cells, and waste products such as lactic acid are eliminated more quickly from your body, aiding recovery from injury or just overworked muscles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be completely undressed?
This is entirely up to you. While massage is typically performed with the client unclothed, it is most important for you to be comfortable. Many clients choose to leave their underwear on, and this is perfectly acceptable. The massage therapist will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet.
Will I be covered during the session?
You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
Where will my massage session take place?
W Massage has a room used solely for massage sessions. The room will be warm, peaceful, and soft music will be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table specifically adjusted for your comfort.
Who will perform the massage?
Your massage will be given by a Certified Massage Therapist who has attended an accredited massage school and received training in anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, pathology, and specific massage techniques.
How long of a massage session should I schedule?
The average full-body massage session lasts one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, such as neck and shoulders, back or legs and feet. A 90-minute massage allows time for a relaxing full-body massage plus focused work on an area that may be bothering you.
How will I feel after my massage?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from chronic tension and pain caused by injury or repetitive movement. This can last for varying lengths of time depending on the person, how frequently massage is received, and how long the particular condition has previously existed. Clients often report sleeping quite restfully during the night following a massage. Soreness can occur in areas of the body, especially if it’s your first massage. This can be reduced icing areas of tenderness, and by drinking plenty of water afterwards in order to flush the toxins that are released from your soft tissues during the session.
What should I do during the massage?
Make yourself comfortable. You may relax and be quiet, and even fall asleep. You may engage in conversation with your massage therapist and ask her any questions you may have. Most importantly, you should inform your therapist if the pressure is ever too much or too little, or if you are experiencing particular areas of tenderness or discomfort.
Are there any medical conditions that would make massage inadvisable?
Yes. Therefore, please inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking on the health intake form that you will fill out prior to the massage.
